BrightStar Care targets healthcare system and payer partnerships with latest pilot


Two Chicago-based home care companies are teaming up to illustrate major trends in home care.

On Tuesday, BrightStar Care – one of the nation’s largest home care franchisors – announced it was joining Dina’s digital home care coordination network. In doing so, the home care and senior residency franchise organization hopes to improve its ability to work with hospital and health plan partners.

“We felt that Dina’s vision to enable better coordination of care really aligned with our vision to leverage the BrightStar network to deliver solutions to healthcare systems and payers,” said Dean Ulizio, Chief Strategy Officer from BrightStar Care, to Home Health Care News in an email. “We were also impressed with how their platform automates the workflow of communication and referral processes at a time when traditional approaches and methods have been tested by the COVID pandemic and the changing landscape of Health care. ”

While headquartered in Chicago, BrightStar Care’s global franchise network spans 340 locations, with approximately 75% of the US population reaching a local office in less than 30 minutes by car. BrightStar’s care portfolio ranges from home care and medical-grade palliative care services to company support and other non-medical offerings.

Its new partner, Dina, is a home care technology provider that helps providers, hospitals, payers and others coordinate home care services. Founded in 2015 as “Prepared Health,” the company was first a healthcare communication platform inspired by social media.

Since then, however, Dina has evolved to also help her partners collect all kinds of patient data inside the home. The tech company is also helping its partners by using AI to recommend evidence-based non-medical interventions that can lead to fewer emergency room visits and unnecessary hospitalizations.

Recently, Dina has extended its services to also include a lightweight remote patient monitoring package.

“Dina’s model of care comes together around this label that we use more and more called ‘care traffic control’, which really helps hospitals and health plans to improve or improve their traditional functions of managing patients. case or the health of the population ”, declared the president of Dina. and CEO Ashish Shah told HHCN. “This makes it possible to coordinate and monitor patients more closely in the future care setting – the home. ”

BrightStar Care will initially work with Dina in the Philadelphia market, where Dina has built a strong network of home care, hospital and skilled nursing (SNF) partnerships.

Through the Dina platform, all of these groups can now turn to BrightStar to address non-medical home care needs focused on the social determinants of health.

“They are going to be a good important player in this market,” Shah said. “And they will join groups like Bayada Home Health Care, Holy Redeemer and others that we have partnered with in this region.”

There are a few use cases that BrightStar Care is particularly excited about, including automating the referral process.

Overall, Dina makes it easier for discharge planners and case managers to choose providers based on quality and geography, streamlining communication and workflows, Ulizio said.

“Dina also has the ability to coordinate care throughout the client journey, where family members, providers and home care staff can communicate with each other and create a circle of care around the person,” he added.

While BrightStar Care plans to test Dina in Philadelphia first, there’s a good chance the partnership will expand to other markets in the not-too-distant future.

“Over the years, we’ve learned that successful deployments start with successful pilots,” said Ulizio. “They give you the opportunity to learn what you don’t know, understand how the market and end customers will react and identify the challenges our franchisees will face. While we often launch into select markets with a new program, it is almost always the intention to check the program to prepare it for a system-wide launch.

Overall, the new partnership between BrightStar Care and Dina reflects the increasingly important role home care plays in managing populations. This role will likely become more critical in the days to come.

Due to record COVID-19 numbers in November, healthcare organizations continue to look for ways to shift care home and out of facilities.

“COVID has definitely accelerated home care delivery models, whether it’s high acuity home hospital services, home SNF services or home dialysis,” Shah said. “We are simply seeing an explosion in care transferred to the home. This is one of the main drivers of our model, because not just any supplier can provide you with everything you need. It is often a collection of different service providers which must be closely coordinated.
