Google is the clear leader in terms of search. The brand has become synonymous with web search, and ultimately Google says it has proof that most of the people people search for on Bing, its biggest rival, are “Google.”
The search engine giant faces legal problems in Europe due to its dominance in the search space. However, Google says people are choosing to use its search engine rather than being forced to use it.
According to 9To5Google, Alphabet, the parent company of Google, presented evidence to the court that the most common search term on Bing is in fact “Google”. This means that a lot of people who are forced to use Bing for one reason or another are actually using it to try to access Google.
Here’s what Alphabet’s lawyer said about people using Bing to access Google:
We have submitted evidence showing that by far the most common search query on Bing is Google. People use Google because they want to, not because they have to. Google’s market share in general search is consistent with consumer surveys showing that 95% of users prefer Google over competing search engines.
Since Alphabet’s lawyer takes these claims to court, we have to assume that the data is correct. Otherwise, the company would perjure itself, which certainly wouldn’t be a smart move.
Presumably, people use Bing because it’s the default search engine in Microsoft’s Edge browser, and they don’t know how to change it. Thus, they use the browser’s default search engine to access Google and find the information they need.
Whatever the reason, it seems pretty clear that people are choosing to use Google search. Even when Google isn’t forced on people through their browser or operating system, like on Android, they still look to Google to find what they want.
