Is it better to spend taxpayers’ money on people’s well-being or to extend largesse to corporate friends

ISSRU (LUDHIANA): Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann today addressed Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking whether it is better to spend taxpayers’ money on people’s welfare or give largesse to friendly businesses.

Interacting with reporters here on the sidelines of a ceremony held to pay tribute to Shaheed Karnail Singh Issru, the Chief Minister said the state government is making wise use of public money using it for good -being of the people and to make them an equal partner in the socio-economic development of the state.

On the other hand, the Union government has authorized the looting of the public treasury in broad daylight by its business friends, as several of them fled the country taking several lakh crores from the banks, the minister said in chief.

Bhagwant Mann also asked the Prime Minister to clarify whether the promise to put Rs 15 lakh in each account was a giveaway or a ‘bubble’.

Responding to another question, the Chief Minister said that the state government has a duty to enhance community harmony, peace and brotherhood in the state. He said no stone will be left unturned in maintaining law and order in the state. Bhagwant Mann said the state government is committed to ensuring that the hard-won peace is not disrupted at any cost.

The Chief Minister said he flagged the issue of groundwater depletion at the recently concluded NITI Aayog meeting. He said immediate corrective action is needed to save this precious natural resource of Punjab. Bhagwant Mann said almost all the blocks in the state were in a dark zone as far as the water table is concerned.

The chief minister said it was of concern that the same high-powered engines that are used to extract oil in Dubai and other Arab countries are being used to lift groundwater in the state. He said this needs to be checked immediately so that our future generations are not deprived of water. Bhagwant Mann said concerted efforts are being made in this regard so that the water in the state is preserved.

Paying tribute to Shaheed Karnail Singh Issru, the Chief Minister said the martyr was the hero of the liberation of Goa from Portuguese imperialism. He said that the people will always remain indebted to this great national hero for his supreme sacrifice. Bhagwant Mann said he was lucky to have had the opportunity to visit this sacred place.

Earlier, the Chief Minister paid tribute to Shaheed Karnail Singh Issru in his native village and also congratulated Mrs. Charanjit Kaur, the widow of Shaheed Karnail Singh Issru.
