The swearing-in ceremony for the 90 seventh-term members of the Legislative Council (LegCo) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) took place on Monday in the House of the LegCo complex.

The taking of the oath is legally binding. The oath-lender must sincerely believe and strictly adhere to the relevant oath prescribed by law. At around 12:00 p.m., the 90 lawmakers all finished taking the oath. Later that day, Carrie Lam, the oath administrator, determined that the oaths taken by the 90 members of LegCo were valid, according to a statement released Monday afternoon by the Hong Kong SAR government.
The display of the national emblem for the first time at the swearing-in ceremony embodied the legal status of Hong Kong SAR as a local administrative region of the People’s Republic of China under “one country, two systems” , and demonstrated the implementation of the principle of “patriots administering Hong Kong” to the local legislature, said the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Hong Kong SAR.
It is hoped that all members of LegCo’s new tenure will work with the government of Hong Kong SAR and various sectors of the community under the leadership of the Director General of Hong Kong SAR to resolve outstanding economic and livelihood issues, actively promote social justice and create a better future. for Hong Kong, the bureau said in a statement.
LegCo’s seventh term began its four-year term on Saturday. The new LegCo is expected to hold its first session on January 12.
LegCo’s election, the first since improvements to the Hong Kong SAR electoral system, was successfully held on December 19, 2021.
In the election, a total of 153 candidates stood for 90 seats, including 20 from geographic constituencies, 30 from functional constituencies and 40 from the Election Commission constituency.
