Westerly veteran gets long-awaited medal

Westerly — Joseph G. Chan, 96, was recognized and honored for his military service during the Korean War during a medal ceremony Wednesday in the Municipal Courtroom at City Hall.

Rhode Island U.S. Senator Jack Reed held the ceremony, during which Chan was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.

Chan served as cook; after being honorably discharged in 1954, he returned to Westerly and opened his own restaurant, Chen’s Village Restaurant.
